Rihanna’s Tweet on farmers divides Celebrities

In the world of today, millions of people can pretty much tell you so much about Rihanna. That’s how popular and influential she is. As a musician, she enjoys a career that has seen so many of her songs top charts till date. In recent times, she has been scene to delve in beauty and fashion, coming out top on almost everything she ventures into. That’s how much leverage her fame affords her. This means her voice matters in societal and international matters.

One of such matter she had lent her voice to of recent is the protest going on in India. The protest has continued for months, and just following just on reaction tweet from her, there is massive division between celebrities, both in India and abroad.

This protest was staged by farmers in India, especially those in Punjab and Haryana. They have been protesting on the Delhi border since November 2020. Their fight has been against the government, asking for a repeal of the three farm laws as well as the legally guaranteeing them a minimum support price for their produce.

In her tweet, Rihanna had shared a news headline, which she caption “why aren’t we talking about this?” Not long after she tweeted, from her over 100 million followers on Twitter she has seen about 22k retweets and 490k likes. This count increases by the hour. Some celebrities took time to react in support of her statement. However, there are also some who warned her not to interfere in Indian internal matters.

The Ministry of External Affairs in India warns celebrities to stop commenting on the matter without full knowledge of what’s going on in the country. “The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible” the official statement from the ministry stated.

Some of the celebrities who also tweeted in support of Rihanna include; Kamala Harris’ niece, Meena Harris, Mia Khalifa, Diljit Dosanjh, Greta Thunberg, amongst others. Canadian YouTube star, Lily Singh also supported Rihanna by tweeting in response “Yes! Thank you so much Rihanna. This is a humanity issue! #IStandWithFarmers and this narrative is TIRED”.

Since everyone is entitled to their opinion on the internet, celebrities who took stand with the government of India included Kangana Ranaut, a Bollywood actor. Also, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha said his bit. “My country is proud of our farmers and knows how important they are, I trust it will be addressed soon. We don’t need an outsider poking her nose in our internal matters”

Since the pandemic began, several protests have rocked different parts of the world, with people coming out in numbers to demand one right or the other. When such situations happen, it’s always difficult to point fingers, especially online. As one might get on the foot of different persons.
